Have other people proofread your resume before you send it anywhere.

bullet

When given the opportunity, always email your resume with a hard copy following via first class mail.

bullet

Send a brief customized letter with each resume

bullet

If using a recruiter, make sure they have all your pertinent information (i.e. relocation availability, compensation requirement, position desired)

bullet

Go over your resume before each interview.  Whomever is interviewing you probably just did.

bullet

Have printed reference list with you at interview and be prepared to submit it.

bullet

Have several different versions of your resume ready for different types of positions.

Don't

Never give the reason for leaving a job (this applies to terminations too).  It is always better to explain it in an interview.

bullet

"References Available on Request" is assumed and unnecessary on all resumes.

bullet

Never list references on your resume

bullet

Don't omit dates of employment.  Month and year or hire and termination are a must.

bullet

Do not date your resume

bullet

Do not include personal or physical information.

bullet

Never list schooling before college if you have a degree.

bullet

Never use "action-words".  Sparked, streamlined and accelerated are passé.

bullet

Never include salary information in your resume

bullet

Never exaggerate your responsibilities.  If references are checked the truth will come out.
